Welcome to YAD MIZRAH MAGAZINE.
The first and only Sephardic and Mizrahi literary magazine.
Welcome to Yad Mizrah Magazine!
Yad Mizrah is the first and only international Sephardic and Mizrahi literary magazine. We publish writers, thinkers, and artists from across the world, bringing forward a cultural heritage that is still too often marginalized from mainstream conversation about Jewish past, present, and future. We are actively seeking to expand the Jewish cultural canon rather than just claim a corner of it; our goal is not only to celebrate Sephardic and Mizrahi history and creativity, but to place it in conversation with the full breadth of Jewish experience.
The stories of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews are not “niche” or peripheral. They are Jewish history, and they belong to the Jewish People. As the editor, the analogy I always give is as an Iraqi Jew, none of my family perished in the Holocaust; but the Holocaust belongs to me and is part of my history because it happened to Am Israel. Similarly, the Mizrahi story must belong to all of us— and we at Yad Mizrah reject the framing of Mizrahi identity as a sub-category of modern American identity politics. Our purpose is not to divide Jews into demographic boxes, but to stitch together a more complete picture of who we are. Our editorial philosophy is that Jewish unity is strengthened through truth. We actively try to publish stories that challenge the mainstream.
That being said: Yad Mizrah welcomes contributors of every background and tradition. Past issues have included Jewish writers of both Mizrahi, Sephardic, and Ashkenazi descent, as well as non-Jewish voices— including Kurdish Muslims and Egyptian Coptic Christians— whose perspectives on Mizrahi Jewry have enriched our conversation.
